Speaker Bio: José Del Río III is the Local Redistricting Advocate for California Common Cause and is a native of Los Angeles, California. After obtaining his Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 2019, José served as the Audrey Irmas Legal Fellow with the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA), where he worked to achieve student debt relief for low-income and financially distressed student loan borrowers, many of whom were victims of fraud and/or discrimination. While in law school, José served as the Adam Freeman Scott Memorial Grant fellow for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), where he worked on various areas of Civil Rights law and impact litigation, including the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) and the federal Voting Rights Act (VRA). Prior to law school, José was a community organizer with Organizing For Action (OFA) where he organized around issues including gun violence prevention, healthcare rights, climate change, and specialized in organizing in underserved and underrepresented populations. As a member of the Common Cause California team, José’s work is focused on local redistricting efforts in California.
