Hello Inland Empire Democrats!

At the August 20th General Meeting we heard local candidates speak about their candidacy for the November 8th General Election.

We will be providing a list of our supported candidates to San Bernardino Central Committee. This is very important because we can't go against San Bernardino Central Committee's endorsements.

RADC members must be heard so we are asking you to take a straw poll.

Candidates are listed below with their associated chat and member questions.

Here's the link to the Straw Poll:

Thank you all so much for having me here today. I want to note that I have 3 opponents, and I am the only Democrat running in District 1. I appreciate your support and look forward to continued collaboration.  Please contact me with further questions and ideas!

At the district, we recently approved a new plan to assure both the financial stability and organize KVCR in a way that maintains our important access to NPR and PBS, increase local content for our news desert, and increase student involvement. With the $15 million allocation from the state budget, that money cannot be spent on anything except KVCR. We’ll be sure there is oversight to ensure the funds are not wasted on unnecessary administrative red tape or bloat, but instead go to the programs and services that are critical.

Mary Valdemar (she/hers) Yuhaaviatam/Serrano Land to Everyone (11:59 AM)
My Question was to Nathan:  Why did you not pursue the endorsement of the IE Labor Council? Nor attend the Labor Academy?

Nathan Gonzales to Everyone (12:00 PM)
And to respectfully disagree with Ms. Valdemar, the chancellor, was directly involved in the $15 million dollar ask with the majority leader.

Nathan Gonzales to Everyone (12:01 PM)

Sorry, I have to return to my job, but am happy to respond to any questions in writing later. As a lifelong Democrat, Thank you for the opportunity.

Nathan Gonzales to Everyone (12:04 PM)
Quick response to Ms. Valdemar’s question - because I am completely new to the politics side of this, I was totally unaware of the Labor Council process until after it had taken place.  I fully support labor and have no issue making my support known.  I anticipate endorsement by Southwest Carpenters union very soon.  Thank you.

Christian Shaughnessy Board of Trustees Area 4 Candidate He/Him/ to Everyone (12:02 PM)
Thank you Brother Nathan! No matter what, there will be a Democrat in this seat after November so let's be proud of that. We scared the GOP off from this seat!

I want to really highlight what you asked James because KVCR/FNX was almost dismantled from PBS/NPR & the STAFF had to go above the admin & board heads to push for the 15M$ that was awarded through Eloise. Only after those funds were received did some folks become supportive.

Christian Shaughnessy Board of Trustees Area 4 Candidate He/Him/ to Everyone (11:58 AM)
Answering a Sister's question about KVCR: I strongly supported the student-led Save KVCR movement over the years to prevent financial shell games happening that could have resulted in the ending and privatization of KVCR. Furthermore, defending First Nations Experience, the only Indigenous station of its kind in the nation is personal to me as a Mecha Co-Chair. We have to allocate money honestly to both these programs instead of spending it on empty office space and endless administrators.

Michael Tamony to Everyone (12:00 PM)
Is that Assembly Leader Eloise Gomez-Reyes that is endorsing Trustee Nathan Gonzales?

Mary Valdemar (she/hers) Yuhaaviatam/Serrano Land to Everyone (12:01 PM)
My Question to Christian:  Can you please explain in more detail your long standing presence & commitment to the students within the SBCCD District?

Michael Tamony to Everyone (12:09 PM)

I have a question for Christian. You solicited an endorsement from the Redlands Area Democratic Club for a city council race in the city of San Bernardino. You then failed to meet the requirements for that city council race and we had to pull our endorsement. Can you explain why you solicited an endorsement prior to qualifying and why you failed to qualify for that ballot?

Michael Tamony to Everyone (12:49 PM)
Christian, you held an event for the San Bernardino City Council race you didn't qualify for on February 20, 2022. Are you saying the next day you moved out of the San Bernardino City district? That would be the six months you just told us.

*****Christian Shaughnessy Board of Trustees Area 4 Candidate He/Him/ to Everyone (12:51 PM)
I thank Brother Michael for the spirited question! It was an estimate since I don't exactly keep a calendar of that around. I have spent over a decade doing work in the district and when I am elected will be doing the job for free, so I'm not exactly doing this for the glory Brother!

Michael Tamony to Everyone (12:52 PM)
And the other question?

Michael Tamony to Everyone (12:52 PM)
You solicited an endorsement from the Redlands Area Democratic Club for a city council race in the city of San Bernardino. You then failed to meet the requirements for that city council race and we had to pull our endorsement. Can you explain why you solicited an endorsement prior to qualifying and why you failed to qualify for that ballot?

Mary Valdemar (she/hers) Yuhaaviatam/Serrano Land to Everyone (12:52 PM)
I want to make it clear, we just talked about the housing instability for youth and students.  Villainizing our young adults for moving around the local jurisdiction is very short sighted.
Michael Tamony to Everyone (12:54 PM)
Moving is not the issue. Lying about how long someone has lived in the district they are running in is the issue.

Christian Shaughnessy Board of Trustees Area 4 Candidate He/Him/ to Everyone (12:55 PM)
Many endorsements take place before the formal qualification! A signature mismatch issue occurred with young voters not having their signature match their ROV ones which is all too common for young people!

Mary Valdemar (she/hers) Yuhaaviatam/Serrano Land to Everyone (12:55 PM)
The fact is that most of our students move around the area and as long as they stay within the district boundaries it does not affect them, nor does it impact the board members serving office. I do not like the tone as democrats insinuating that being poor & not able to afford permanent housing as a negative for candidates.

Christian Shaughnessy Board of Trustees Area 4 Candidate He/Him/ to Everyone (12:56 PM)
And I hereby pledge not to run a negative race in between Democrats which is vital to keep our turnout up! I am also not going to take a salary for this job which is important to know the struggle of the community~

Eddie, He/Him, SoCalCOSH to Everyone (12:57 PM)
I'm excited about your campaign brother Christian, i wanna know about the collab and endorsement with unions to hit the doors.

Mary Valdemar (she/hers) Yuhaaviatam/Serrano Land to Everyone (1:03 PM)
You are insinuating because he moved from SB to Redlands within the SAME district is somehow an issue... I take issue with that.

*****Correction and for transparency, Christian's actual residency in Area 4 was 2 months and 24 days, not the 6 months he stated.
