🗳️ What Is Proposition 50?

Proposition 50—officially titled the Election Rigging Response Act—is a proposed constitutional amendment on California’s November 4, 2025, special election ballot. It was introduced in direct response to aggressive mid-decade redistricting efforts in states like Texas, Missouri, etc., where Republican-led legislatures are redrawing congressional maps to gain a partisan advantage.

🔍 What Prop 50 Would Do

If passed, Prop 50 would:

  • Temporarily pause the authority of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, an independent, bipartisan body that currently draws congressional maps.

  • Allow the California Legislature to implement a new congressional district map—outlined in Assembly Bill 604—for elections from 2026 through 2030.

  • Restore the Citizens Redistricting Commission’s authority in 2031, following the next census.

This measure is designed to counterbalance partisan redistricting in other states by giving California the flexibility to adjust its own maps in the short term.

Supporters argue that Prop 50 is a strategic defense of democratic representation. As other states redraw maps to favor one party, California risks losing fair congressional representation unless it responds. Proposition 50 aims to:
