Welcome to this week’s Call to Action, where you can find some of the latest events and news to help you take part in the issues that matter to our communities.
DON’T FORGET TO MAIL IN OR DROP OFF YOUR BALLOT – LAST DAY TO VOTE IN THE PRIMARIES IS JUNE 7TH!!!
This week’s actions provide us with steps to take to answer the question: how do we build safe and resilient communities (1) with the constant threat of gun violence hanging over us? #UvaldeStrong #BuffaloStrong #SanBernardinoStrong; (2) with the right to a safe abortion being overturned state by state (and, perhaps this month, by the Supreme Court); and (3) with addressing climate change, which continues to accelerate?
If you have a call to action that you would like us to highlight, email us at: [email protected]

2. Ensuring California Is an Abortion Refuge for Women in the United States
This past December, California’s legislature pledged to undertake measures to secure California as a sanctuary state for women seeking abortions. In early May, Governor Newsom stated that he wishes to bring a total of $125 million in additional funding dedicated to abortion services. He also wishes to launch an incentive program for companies to relocate to California from states with abortion bans. https://www.politico.com/news/2022/05/11/newsom-budget-will-bolster-californias-abortion-sanctuary-status-00031895
We need to ensure that the California legislature approves those funding requests in the 2022-23 budget, which must be passed by June 15th. Please:
- Write to Governor Newsom telling him thank you for his actions to strengthen California’s sanctuary state status for abortions and
- Write to your state Senator and Assemblymember asking them to be sure and pass this funding request in the 2022-23 budget. You can copy and paste the information, above, and add your words to request that they please support these actions. Women’s lives are on the line.

3. End Attack on Solar Panels by a Koch-Supported Obstruction (from DemCast)
“An ongoing trade investigation by the Department of Commerce has paralyzed the American solar industry, with sweeping consequences for the country’s clean energy and climate goals.
“The company behind the petition that led to the slowdown – Auxin Solar – is repped by a PR firm that’s linked to Koch Industries, the oil and gas industry & the GOP.”
Write to our Senators today and make sure that they (1) know that this is going on and (2) that you want them to step in and take action. We cannot afford to waste any time in our expansion of solar in the U.S.
Sample text:
Dear Senator Feinstein / Padilla:
I have learned about the ongoing trade investigation by the Department of Commerce that is paralyzing America’s solar industry. The company behind the petition that led to the slowdown – Auxin Solar – is repped by a PR firm that’s linked to Koch Industries, the oil and gas industry, and the GOP. Please reach out to the Commerce Department today to ensure that this roadblock is lifted ASAP.

- On May 2, 2022, the following press release came out of Sacramento from our state leaders:
SACRAMENTO – Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego), Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) and Governor Gavin Newsom released the below statement following news reports detailing a preliminary U.S. Supreme Court majority draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade and end federal constitutional protections for the right to abortion:
“California will not stand idly by as women across America are stripped of their rights and the progress so many have fought for gets erased. We will fight. California is proposing an amendment to enshrine the right to choose in our state constitution so that there is no doubt as to the right to abortion in this state. We know we can’t trust the Supreme Court to protect reproductive rights, so California will build a firewall around this right in our state constitution. Women will remain protected here.”

If you have not already done so, send a message to the Governor, Speaker Rendon in the Assembly, Pro Tem Atkins in the Senate (emails are above), as well as your own assemblymember and state senator to tell them you support this action.
Suggested Text:
Dear [NAME]:
I fully support the proposal of an amendment to the California state constitution to enshrine the right to choose, so that there is no doubt at all regarding the right to abortion in our state. Women must be protected here, and California must take whatever steps it can to protect this basic civil liberty which gives women the right to manage their own bodies.
